The essays in Lasting Impressions have never before appeared in audiobook form and together they make up, in the author's own words, 'a journey through different countries and different generations'. The subjects range from Bruce Chatwin and Salmon Rushdie to Simon de Beauvoir and Bernard Shaw, from Lorca and Flaubert to John Updike and Walker Percy, from P. G. Wodehouse and Molly Keane to Andre Malraux and Antoine de Saint-Exupery. Published in the year of 1990, V. S. Pritchett's 90th birthday, Lasting Impressions is a tribute to one of the greatest and best loved writers of our time.
Victor Sawdon Pritchett (1900-1997) was born over a toyshop in 1900 and, much to his everlasting distaste, was named after Queen Victoria. A writer and critic, his is widely reputed to be one of the best short story writers of all time, with the rare ability to capture the extraordinary strangeness of everyday life. He died in 1997.

V. S. Pritchett excelled in several genres of English letters; the one I think I like best was his literary criticism. LASTING IMPRESSIONS is Exhibit A. These essays were all triggered by particular books, and thus might be regarded by the pedantically inclined as book reviews. But they range far beyond a simple book review. In some cases, I am willing to bet, the reader will learn more from Pritchett's "review" than she would from the book that occasioned it. There are twenty-seven essays here, written by Pritchett between the ages of sixty-one and eighty-seven, with no evidence whatsoever of declining craft, wit, or wisdom. At four to at most nine pages, they are models of literary concision. Even though they now are between a quarter and half a century old, only a few have become somewhat dated.The subjects are individual men and women: in most cases, the book nominally being reviewed is a biography of him or her; in some cases, he or she was the author of the book in question. The subjects include the famous - Federico García Lorca, Thomas Mann, George Orwell, John Updike, and Oscar Wilde - and the not-so-famous - Gerald Brenan, Molly Keane, Le Roy Ladurie, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, and Mary Wollstonecraft. My favorites were the essays on Simone de Beauvoir (a review of her book "Growing Old"), Flaubert and Turgenev, Malraux and Picasso, Forrest Reid, Rebecca West, and P.G. Wodehouse.
The erudition on display is impressive. The writing is superb, as one can expect from V. S. Pritchett. And then there are the quips. Regarding George Bernard Shaw, Pritchett writes, "Like many other Irishmen, he turned his ego into a profession." Rebecca West failed in her first career-endeavor, that of being an actress, because "she could not unself herself and become other people".
Few would enjoy reading the book straight through. These "lasting impressions" (admittedly, an odd title, because as much as I admire most of them, I doubt that this time next year I will recall more than a few of them) are better sampled in small doses. For the past two weeks, my reading before turning in at night has been two of Pritchett's essays. In addition to the intrinsic pleasure of reading Pritchett, I added five new books, previously unknown to me, to the list of books I would like to read before I give up the ghost.
